What Engine Comes Standard with Ram Heavy Duty Trucks?
All Ram Heavy Duty models, including the 2500, 3500, and Chassis Cab, come with a 6.4L HEMI V8 engine as standard equipment. Under the hood of the 2024 Ram 2500 lineup, the HEMI engine lays down 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque for a maximum towing capacity of up to 17,410 pounds and a maximum payload capacity of 3,680 pounds. Meanwhile, in the Ram 3500, the same output numbers offer a 17,750-pound maximum towing capacity and can take up to 7,220 pounds in the bed. Finally, with the Chassis Cab, available in 3500, 4500, and 5500 platforms, the HEMI engine offers a maximum towing capacity of up to 21,150 pounds. It’s important to note that these towing capacities are when the truck is equipped with the proper towing equipment. All Ram Heavy Duty models powered by the HEMI engine come standard with a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission and are available with 4×4, while rear-wheel drive comes as standard equipment.
Does Ram Offer a Diesel Option?
Many heavy-duty truck enthusiasts prefer their trucks to run on diesel. The Ram Heavy Duty lineup is also eligible for a 6.7L Cummins TurboDiesel inline six-cylinder engine available in both standard output and high-output variants. The Ram 2500, however, is only available with the standard output, which offers 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque, giving drivers a maximum towing capacity of up to 19,970 pounds and a payload capacity of up to 2,790 pounds. Meanwhile, the Ram 3500 is available with both the standard and high-output variants. With the standard output, the Ram 3500 can haul up to 22,220 pounds behind it and up to 6,390 in the bed. However, the high-output Cummins TurboDiesel engine gives the Ram 3500 420 horsepower and 1,075 lb-ft of torque for a maximum towing capacity of up to 34,610 pounds and a payload capacity of up to 6,120 pounds. Lastly, the Chassis Cab, like the Ram 2500, is available with the standard output Cummins engine. This gives it 360 horsepower and 800 lb-ft of torque for a maximum towing capacity of up to 34,770 pounds. The Cummins TurboDiesel engine comes paired with a high-torque-enabled Aisin six-speed automatic transmission and is available in both two- and four-wheel drive formats.
