Learn More from Pinckney Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram!
The Ram 1500 is a truck loved by critics and drivers alike, as can be seen with the trophy case full of prestigious awards and a loyal customer base. The 2025 model year marks an exciting new chapter for the Ram 1500. Along with an overhaul of the standard Ram 1500 model, the 2025 model year brings about the Ramcharger, the brand’s first-ever plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. The Ramcharger is on track to compete with the top contenders in the segment, offering a driving range of nearly 700 miles and incredible power numbers. Here at Pinckney Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we are thrilled about Ram’s first-ever PHEV, and we’re excited to take this opportunity to share it with you!
What Powers the 2025 Ramcharger?
The Pentastar 3.6L V6 engine has been a staple in the Ram 1500 lineup since 2011. Loved for its power and efficiency, the Pentastar engine has remained standard equipment for the Ram 1500. For the Ramcharger, however, the Pentastar engine is taken to the next level by integrating it with an EV powerplant. Mounted to the battery is a 130-kilowatt-hour onboard generator to power the 250-kilowatt front axle-mounted electric drive module (EDM), and the 238-kilowatt EDM mounted to the rear axle. Helping power these EDMs is a 92-kWh rechargeable battery pack with its power cell modules in a parallel arrangement. Strategically tucked underneath the rear floorboard, the battery pack allows for a flat floor space for easy cargo loading and is protected from the elements. Unlike most PHEVs, the Ramcharger is eligible for Level 3 DC Fast Charging, which is typically only available for fully-electric vehicles, in addition to Level 1 and Level 2 chargers. By using a 400-volt DC Fast Charger, Ramcharger owners can gain 50 miles of range in just ten minutes! Furthermore, Ram has announced a targeted driving range of up to 690 miles for the Ramcharger!
How Does the Ramcharger’s Powertrain Work?
No matter how it is done, meshing electric and gas power is a complex process. Ram set out to maximize power, range, and versatility by modifying the operation of the Ramcharger’s PHEV system. It begins with the driver creating mechanical power in the V6 engine by pressing the accelerator pedal. This power is sent to the onboard generator that accompanies the Pentastar engine under the hood which then translates it into electrical energy. This power is distributed to both the battery pack for on-the-go recharging and to the EDMs for driving power. What’s cool about the Ramcharger’s powertrain is that drivers can choose how the EDMs are powered, whether that power comes from the battery, under the hood, or both. For example, the internal combustion engine can be disengaged, running in all-electric mode. However, you can reverse this and power the wheels with the onboard generator. Finally, you can achieve maximum power and performance by powering the wheels with both the onboard generator and the battery pack. No matter how it is driven, with the onboard generator and EDMs, there is no mechanical linkage between the Pentastar engine and the wheels, creating the most efficient version of that engine ever. To further maximize range and efficiency, Ram created a front wheel-end disconnect, allowing the front wheels to spin freely by deactivating the front EDM while driving in ideal conditions. When conditions become dicey, the EDMs are reactivated to provide all-wheel drive traction. The rear EDM is accompanied by a locking rear differential to counteract the loss of traction caused by even more challenging terrain.
Performance and Capability of the Ramcharger
The Ramcharger boasts impressive power, making a name for itself in the PHEV truck segment. Ram has targeted 663 horsepower and 615 lb-ft of torque for the Ramcharger, allowing for a payload capacity of 2,625 pounds and a towing capacity of up to 14,000 pounds when equipped with a class five trailer hitch. Furthermore, the Ramcharger can achieve a 0-60 time of just 4.4 seconds! You may be thinking that these numbers sound great on paper, but how capable is the Ramcharger in the real world? Well, we’re here to put that question to rest! With an EDM on both the front and rear axles, the Ramcharger offers all-wheel drive, allowing for superior traction on nearly any terrain in any weather. Additionally, the Ramcharger is built on the impressive STLA Frame platform, meticulously crafted for full-size electric vehicles featuring a body-on-frame design. This advanced frame made of high-strength steel achieves the perfect balance of durability and stiffness. The mid-section of the frame is widened for the Ramcharger to make way for the battery pack, which, in turn, is protected by the frame rails. Lastly, the Ramcharger features a four-corner air suspension with active leveling. This impressive air suspension system is fully adjustable with Entry/Exit, Aero, Off-Road 1, and Off-Road 2 modes for the appropriate ride height for any driving situation.
