When you go off-roading for the first time, you need to know that it will be a lot different from your daily commute. The driving skills you will need to stay safe off the road don’t even compare to driving down the highway. The good news is that with a bit of background knowledge and a ton of practice, you’ll be able to tackle the wilderness in your Jeep in no time. If you’re ready to head off the road, we have some tips to follow that will assist you on your journey. Keep in mind that if you need work done on your Jeep or a new Jeep entirely, we can help you with that here at Pinckney CDJR!

Know Your Vehicle’s Capabilities

The first thing you need to know is that every Jeep is different, so you should never make any assumptions about what your Jeep can and cannot do. You’ll need to understand all the different features and 4×4 ability that your SUV has. For this, it’s best to consult your owner’s manual, as it will contain a wealth of information. Additionally, consider consulting vehicle-specific forums to learn about the different types of terrain your Jeep can handle. Trust us when we tell you that you’re going to want to know the ins and outs of your Jeep before you head off the beaten path.

Learn How to Use Your Off-Roading Systems

All capable off-road vehicles come with a few critical systems that you will need to familiarize yourself with before heading off the road. These include a Traction Control, which comes with the majority of Jeep vehicles. It might have a simple on/off setting or a complex electrical system with various settings designed to conquer a specific set of situations. In any case, this system will control wheel slip, ensuring that torque is transferred from the tires to the trail. It can be surprising if you have never experienced the traction control kicking in, but you will never know if the system is functioning correctly. Next is the 4WD High and Low. You’re going to need more torque than usual to conquer different roads, and this is where Low 4WD comes into play. You won’t be able to drive fast on low 4WD, so remember to switch it back when you’re done off-roading. Finally, there is the locking differential, which controls the speed of your wheels. If you get stuck on the trail, this will ensure that all your wheels turn at the same speed.

Get the Right Equipment

Having a capable 4×4 SUV is not the only thing you will need for off-roading. You will also need items such as a first aid kit, a can of extra fuel, a spare tire and tools, a high-lift jack, a portable air compressor, a tow rope, a shovel, and spare water. If you feel inclined, you can also bring along a fire extinguisher and a two-way radio for communicating with your off-road companions. A winch can also come in handy when tackling challenging terrain.

Have a Plan for Recovery

When you’re off-roading, consider what you’ll do if you get stuck and can’t move your Jeep. You’ll want to know your vehicle’s recovery points, which are the points where a hook and strap can be attached from one vehicle to the next, allowing it to pull you out. If you are unclear about where these points are, be sure to consult your Jeep’s owner’s manual. This is one of the reasons why you should never go off-roading alone; having another vehicle on the trail means you can help each other out of difficult situations.

Learn to Drive in Different Conditions

Various conditions, including sand, mud, rocks, and ice, each require distinct skills to navigate. If you don’t know what it takes to make it through these different types of terrain, then you should do some research first. Off-roading can be a challenge, to say the least, but educating yourself will make your off-road experience that much safer and more enjoyable.
