Jeep 4xe FAQs

Jeep 4xe MPGe FAQs
Hybrid and fully electric vehicles are gaining rapid popularity for several reasons. Some drivers are drawn to the smooth power delivery and responsive acceleration that cannot be matched by traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, while others are attracted to the advanced technology and dynamic styling. But the most popular reason is their exceptional fuel efficiency. However, with all this new technology and efficacy comes a world full of new terms and questions. So, the team at Pinckney DCJR thought we would help ease so of your minds.
What does MPGe Stand for?
As you start your journey to buying a new electric vehicle or hybrid, you are sure to come across the term “MPGe.” Generally speaking, this is how the fuel economy of these vehicles is rated. MPGe stands for “Miles Per Gallon Equivalent.” Conventional MPG measures how many miles the car can travel using one gallon of gasoline. Whereas MPG is an abbreviation for ‘miles-per-gallon,’ it is used to indicate the fuel economy of a car or commercial vehicle. For example, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is a plug-in hybrid that offers a 25-mile electric range. The Grand Cherokee 4xe gets an EPA-estimated 56 MPGe in combined gasoline-electric driving and 23 mpg in everyday hybrid driving. It helps you determine how cheap or expensive a car will be to run. Since fully electric vehicles and hybrids don’t always use gas, “MPGe” is a more helpful metric for comparing energy consumption for electric vehicles.
How is MPGe Calculated?
To calculate the MPGe, the Environmental Protection Agency uses an established energy standard of 115,000 BTUs per gallon of gas. The EPA then figured out how much electricity it would take to produce the same energy. They determined that 33.7 kilowatt-hours of electricity would be necessary. Consequently, 1 gallon of gas makes the same ‘heat energy’ as 33.7 kilowatt-hours of electricity. If an electric vehicle can travel 100 miles on 33.7 kWh of electricity, it would be rated with an MPG equivalency of 100 MPGe. Like traditional MPG ratings for a gasoline-powered vehicle, the EPA rates MPGe across city, highway, and combined fuel economy. This is where it is helpful to know the vehicle’s battery size. For instance, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe comes with a 17-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
What Does Range Rating Mean?
When looking at the EPA sticker, another term you will see is “range rating.” This lists how far the vehicle is rated to drive on electric power alone and how far it can continue on gasoline power for hybrid cars. It’s important to understand that much like the MPG of a gasoline vehicle, EV range can vary widely depending on how you drive. You will see the terms “Manufacturer’s Estimated MPGe” and “Driving Range” on the sticker.” For example, if you were looking at the Jeep Wrangler 4xe’s EPA sticker, you would see the Manufacturer’s Estimated MPGe of 49 and the Driving Range of 370 Miles.
