Jeep Hardtop and Door Removal Guide
Check out our Jeep Inventory!
Your Jeep is designed to go off the road, and it does so with relative ease thanks to its powerful engine options, numerous advanced off-road features, and a capability that no other SUVs have. However, while most Jeep drivers love to go off-roading, there is a way to experience the outdoors truly, and that is by removing the hardtop and doors. Although this may sound challenging, we assure you that it’s easy if you follow a few straightforward steps. Below, we have gone over the steps to take off the hardtops and the doors, and once you are done reading, be sure to check out our complete Jeep inventory, which you can find right here on our website!
Remove the Panels and Disconnect the Wiring
The first thing you will want to do is remove the freedom panels from the top of the hardtop. These panels are typically located above the driver’s and passenger’s seats and can be removed by turning the two latches and lifting them up and out of the roof. Now it’s time to move on to the wiring! The wires that you are looking for are the ones that connect the rear wiper, defroster, and third brake light to the hardtop. Disconnect these wires before attempting to remove the hardtop. Excellent, now you are halfway done, and it’s time to move on to the next steps!
Remove the Bolts
The next step is to remove the bolts from the hardtop. Remove the bolts that secure the hardtop to the Jeep using a socket wrench. Most of the time, there will be six to eight bolts to remove, so ensure you secure them all before lifting the hard top. Once you have removed all the bolts, carefully lift the hardtop off the Jeep. Having at least two people do this is recommended, as removing the hardtop can be a heavy and awkward task. Be sure to gather a group of friends when working on this project.
Remove the Mirrors and Door Straps
Now that you have removed the hardtop, it’s time to move on to the doors. Before removing them, remove the side mirrors from the doors to prevent damage or loss. Next, it is time to remove the door straps, located at the bottom of the doors, which are used to limit the door’s opening angle. Finally, unhook the straps from the door frame. Now it’s time to move on to the wiring of the doors! If you have a Jeep with power windows and locks, disconnect the wiring harness at the bottom of the A-pillar.
Remove Door Hinges
Once you have removed the side mirrors and the door straps, the next step is to remove the door hinges, followed by the doors themselves. To remove the door hinges, use a socket wrench to loosen the bolts that secure the hinges to the Jeep. Next, remove the top and bottom hinges to disassemble the door. Once the hinges are removed, carefully lift the door off the Jeep. Doors can be heavy, so it is recommended to have at least one person to help with this step; so get a group of friends together so they can help you out!
