While we all want to watch the snow fall from the comfort of our homes, sometimes, here in Michigan, that is not an option. Soon, you will be out there having to remove the snow from your driveway and the sidewalks. While most homeowners will use a shovel or even a snow blower for snow removal, if you want to remove a large quantity of snow, you will need a snow plow attachment for your truck to get all that unwanted snow out of your driveway. Belo, you will find a few key considerations to keep in mind when plowing snow, as well as the best trucks for the job. How to Plow Snow

Before you start plowing, consider marking any objects with a flag, such as hydrants, large rocks, and pipes. You should also line the edges of your driveway with several flags. Additionally, start by practicing by moving the blades around before tackling your first snow pile. Next, angle the plow to one side to push the snow off in that direction. Next, approach the snow pile so that more than three-fourths of the blade is covered in snow. Then use the “backdrag” technique to remove the snow piled against the structure. Never pile snow on someone’s property or pile snow on the streets or sidewalks. Likewise, you should never pile snow on mailboxes, dumpsters, water drains, or fire hydrants.

Straight Blade Plowing Tips

Straight blades are designed with an optimized blade curl, enabling snow to roll off the plow easily. The first tip is to try adjusting the angle position, which means the blade is angled to the left or right of the vehicle. You will use this position to widen after the first pass. In the straight position, the blade is placed directly in front of the vehicle. Use this position for back dragging, removing a large window, or cleaning up at the end of the job. If you have to move some deep snow, raise the plow several inches off the ground to shear off the top layer. If you have a Power V-Plow, use the V-position for the first pass and then switch to scoop or angle to widen the area.

V-Plowing

If you are a V-snowplow, you use a multi-positioned plow that lets you choose from various blade positions. In the V position, the blades are retracted toward the truck, which is usually used for making the first pass. The next position is the scoop position, used for carrying or controlling the snow with the blades pushed out to form an inverted V shape. This is the most for clearing parking lots or large areas where snow must be pushed straight ahead and not to the side.
